In 2019, Nigerian-American star Rotimi and Tanzanian singer Vanessa Mdee met by chance at the *Essence Culture Festival* in New Orleans—marking the beginning of a love story neither of them saw coming.
The First Meeting: Straight Out of a Romantic Movie
After performing at the festival, both found themselves at a Spotify after-party, neither truly wanting to be there. But fate had a surprise in store. Rotimi recalls with a smile: *"She was sitting by the pool table, the lights reflecting off her. I thought to myself, ‘Who is she?’"*

When COVID-19 spread, lockdown became precious time for them. Vanessa shares: *"I thanked God because the pandemic gave us a chance to deepen our relationship spiritually and emotionally."* Due to travel restrictions, her short visit turned into a permanent stay, allowing them to discover each other away from the spotlight.
From Fame to Faith
In 2020, Vanessa stunned fans by stepping away from music at the peak of her career. She explains: *"The industry was draining me, and I found myself turning to unhealthy habits. I had to choose myself."* Today, she mentors women through her app, *For the Better*, while Rotimi continues acting in *Power Book II: Ghost* and releasing music, believing his work is a *"calling."*
A Kingdom Marriage and a Multicultural Family
The two married in 2021, building what they call a *"kingdom marriage"* centered on faith. With two children, they blend Nigerian, Tanzanian, and American heritage. Rotimi says: *"We give them roots and wings."*
A Future with Purpose
While they haven’t confirmed entering ministry, Vanessa affirms: *"Everything we do will be for God’s glory."* And so, their chance encounter became a journey of faith, love, and purpose.
